Costa-Gavras is a Greek-French filmmaker known for his politically charged films that explore themes of social justice, authoritarianism, and the human cost of political conflict. He gained international recognition with Z (1969), a political thriller based on the assassination of a Greek politician, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Costa-Gavras continued to direct films such as Missing (1982), about the disappearance of an American citizen during the Chilean coup, and The Axe (2005), a dark satire about corporate greed.
