Jafar Panahi

Jafar Panahi is an Iranian filmmaker known for his socially conscious films that challenge political and social norms in Iran. Panahi’s work often centers on the lives of ordinary Iranians and explores themes of human rights, censorship, and freedom. His breakthrough film, The White Balloon (1995), tells the story of a young girl’s quest to buy a goldfish, symbolizing innocence and the challenges of growing up in an oppressive society. Panahi’s other notable films include Offside (2006), which follows a group of girls attempting to watch a soccer match despite Iran’s ban on women attending sporting events, and Taxi (2015), a film made while Panahi was under house arrest. His films have garnered international acclaim for their subtle critiques of Iranian society, despite facing government censorship.
