The Farewell
The Farewell (2019) is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Lulu Wang, based on her own experiences. The film follows Billi (Awkwafina), a Chinese-American woman who returns to China with her family under the guise of a wedding, when in reality, they are gathering to say goodbye to their beloved matriarch, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The family decides not to tell the grandmother (Zhao Shuzhen) about her condition, and the film explores the emotional and cultural tensions that arise from this decision. The Farewell is celebrated for its poignant storytelling, humorous moments, and its exploration of cultural identity, family, and the nature of truth. The film was critically acclaimed, with Awkwafina winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
