Best Romantic Comedy Movies

What Are romantic comedy movies?

A romantic comedy is a film in which the main emphasis is on the love story between two people with the movie’s humor coming from the situations, zany antics and misunderstandings that occur during courtship.

The film is usually light-hearted, funny and focuses on the relationship rather than action or drama.

When we think of romantic comedies, we usually think of boy meets girl and they live happily ever after. However, there are many different kinds of romantic comedies that have been produced over the years.

Best Romantic Comedy Movies

Here’s our list of the best romantic comedy movies of all time. Grab a packet of tissues, as this might get emotional!

Knocked Up (2007)

Late-night romps that lead to pregnancy may seem like a good idea at the time, but they often lead to heartache for the involved parties.

This is incredibly clear in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up” (2007), which tells the story of Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), a schlubby, lazy stoner who gets an unexpected visit from Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), an attractive reporter who wants to interview him for a magazine article.

Unfortunately, their late-night rendezvous leads to her discovering that she’s pregnant, and she encourages Ben to be involved in the baby’s life.

Told with a mix of comedy and drama, Knocked Up is one of the best romantic comedies of the 2000s, thanks to its excellent cast, including Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl as the two leads.

The two play off each other very well, with Rogen being able to deliver both humor and a hint of sadness with his character’s situation. Meanwhile, Heigl gives a powerful performance, and Alison Scott, while supporting players like Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd does great work as well.

The film also benefits from some strong writing by director Judd Apatow and writer/actor Seth Rogen.

She’s Gotta Have It (1986)

Spike Lee’s breakthrough movie, “She’s Gotta Have It”, was a major milestone in the genre. Lee, who also wrote and directed the film, won the Filmmaker’s Trophy at the 1986 Sundance Film Festival for this independent feature.

The story centers on Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns), a twenty-something African-American woman living in Brooklyn. Nola has three lovers — Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell), Mars Blackmon (Lee himself), and Jamie Overstreet (Samuel Jackson). Nola must decide between them after she discovers that they all want an exclusive relationship with her.

I can’t believe something this good is free. The film is free to watch, but you can also pay to download and own the movie.

The acting is good, and the story is even better. I recommend this movie to everybody. I hope it doesn’t disappear one day like a lot of other great movies on Netflix have.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

One of the more likable films of 2012, “Silver Linings Playbook” is a romance and a comedy that stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

It is also a film that features an aspect of mental illness in the main character. However, what is important about this is not so much the representation of mental illness, but how it is dealt with.

Silver Linings Playbook focuses on many aspects of mental illness. Depression and anxiety are both mentioned and we see the effects they can have on both the individual and those around them.

It also deals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). They did it in a way that shows how it can impact one’s life and how it affects those around them.

The film dealt with mental illness in a way that could be considered negative. However, there are some positive aspects to this representation.

For example, it shows how the character uses medication to help manage his mental illness. It also shows how he has supportive friends who care for him and whose love helps keep him going despite his problems.

She’s The Man (2006)

“She’s the Man” is a sweet movie that doesn’t have much of a pulse.

The original She’s the Man from 2006 starred Amanda Bynes as Viola Hastings, a girl who puts on a pair of soccer shorts and becomes her brother to play on his all-boys school’s soccer team. In this version of the movie, Channing Tatum played Viola Hastings.

This time, she pretends to be her brother Sebastian to play for a girls’ school’s volleyball team. In both movies, Viola/Sebastian plays for her/his brother’s team because their parents are too busy to pay attention to them. Both movies also have guys that like Viola because she is pretending to be a boy.

This time around, Viola/Sebastian has an arch enemy named Cameron. Amanda Bynes played Cameron and this is one of the funniest parts of the movie. Seeing two people who you have seen in other roles playing new characters makes you laugh.

Also, both times I have seen this movie (the first time was in 2006), I did not know that Amanda Bynes would play Cameron because she looks so different now.

She's the Man [Blu-ray]
  • Amanda Bynes, Channing Tatum, Laura Ramsey (Actors)
  • Andy Fickman (Director)
  • Audience Rating: PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned)

Love Actually (2003)

This British romantic comedy takes place during the Christmas season in London. The basic story revolves around eight very different couples and their ups and downs in their relationships.

Told in a series of small, interconnected vignettes, these stories are set against the backdrop of Christmas preparations in London.

The film’s structure is like Richard Curtis’ earlier “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994), which is also about the romantic lives of a disparate group of people at different stages in their lives.

A few of the stories are tied together thematically, but most stand-alone. There is little connecting material between the stories, and some characters never appear again once their story has finished.

Most of the action is lighthearted, but one small plotline deals with a national tragedy that brings characters together for an emotional climax.

The film’s ensemble cast includes Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Rowan Atkinson, and Martin Freeman, as well as newcomers Thomas Sangster, Lucia Moniz, Andrew Lincoln, and featuring cameo appearances from several famous British actors including John Hannah and Joanna Page.

Love Actually [Blu-ray]
  • Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth (Actors)
  • Richard Curtis (Director) - Richard Curtis (Writer) - Duncan Kenworthy (Producer)

The main character, Henry Roth had a terrible accident that made him forget everything that had happened the day before. You’ve Got Mail (1998)

“You’ve Got Mail” is a 1998 romantic comedy film directed by Nora Ephron, written by Nora Ephron and David S. Ward, and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

It is about two people in an online romance who are unaware that they are also business rivals. The film features supporting performances by Jason Robards, Greg Kinnear, Joe Viterelli, Parker Posey, and Jean Stapleton.

As a promotion for the film, AOL offered its users the chance to download the movie for free from its website by watching an advertisement about it on their screens. This was one of the earliest examples of online product placement.

The title comes from a scene in which Meg Ryan’s character talks about how she first heard that her lover’s name was Joe: “I was at the dentist, getting my teeth cleaned, and I overheard two dental hygienists talking about this guy named Joe they were going to go out with tonight.

And they said, ‘Don’t you wish you could know what someone like that looks like before you agreed to go out?’. And the other one said yes. And I thought—I wish I could know what he looks like.”

Sleepless In Seattle (1993)

Tom Hanks, at his best, is the perfect romantic comedy lead, and in this film, he plays a widowed father who wants to find love again. His character’s son has other ideas. But by the end of the film, Hanks’ character is off on a new adventure with his kids in tow.

That’s not to say that this film isn’t without its flaws. Meg Ryan plays Annie Reed, a recently separated woman whose son Jonah has become obsessed with a romantic advice radio show called “Love Line.”

Jonah believes that if his mother writes in to the show, the author he knows as John and tells him how she feels about how her life turned out, then her destiny will change for the better. By some weird quirk of fate, Annie gets John’s letter and responds to him. This leads to Annie and Sam’s meeting.

As you can tell from the above description, there is more than meets the eye with “Sleepless In Seattle”. It’s not just another Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film where they meet and fall in love; it’s also an examination of family relationships, particularly between a father and a son who don’t see eye-to-eye on everything.

Notting Hill (1999)

“And I always will be” is a comical line from “Notting Hill”.

The film stars Hugh Grant as William Thacker, an English book shop owner who falls in love with Anna (played by Julia Roberts). After meeting him again at a party, they start dating. Closer to the end of the film, they go on vacation together with her friends.

The pair fall in love, and William even moves to New York to be with her. Anna returns to London for work and they live together, but it is never clear if they are boyfriend/girlfriend.

Noting Hill was filmed on location in London and New York City, and became a big hit after its release, receiving mostly positive reviews.

More than that, the film had many famous quotes and was nominated for two Academy Awards. Julia Roberts also won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Actress, while the film was also nominated for Favorite Motion Picture. The soundtrack became popular as well, selling nearly three million copies.

Notting Hill was remade into Bollywood under the title “Adah Sharma” (2015) starring Adah Sharma, Jackky Bhagnani, and Rajniesh Duggall in the lead roles.
