The Thing (1982)

In 1982 the movie “The Thing” was released. The film, based on a short story by John W. Campbell Jr., is about a shape-shifting alien that terrorizes an Antarctic research station and its crew of twelve men.

The film is about a group of people in an Antarctic research center that have to find out who among them is actually an alien disguised as their colleague.

One by one they are killed off and it becomes apparent that the creature can take on any form it chooses.

It’s up to MacReady (played by Kurt Russell) and Dr. Copper (played by Richard Dysart) to kill the monster before more lives are lost or before it manages to escape into the world at large.

This clever horror/sci-fi flick was ranked number two on Entertainment Weekly’s list of “The Top 50 Greatest Films Since 1980.”

This movie was directed by John Carpenter who also directed Halloween 1978 and has been called “Carpenter’s masterpiece”  as well as being rated very highly on Rotten Tomatoes with 98% approval rating.

It Follows (2014)

The horror film It Follows stars a young woman who has sex with her boyfriend and is then stalked by an unknown creature.

The movie’s plot, which is based on the concept of “the curse,” follows a group of teenagers in Michigan as they are haunted by the same supernatural being that relentlessly pursues its victims.

The 2014 film was directed by David Robert Mitchell, starring Maika Monroe as Jay Height.

This psychological thriller primarily explores how people can have their minds manipulated without realizing it.

What Are Horror Movies?

The film was based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris and features Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, one of cinema’s most well-known villains.

It has been praised widely for its tense plot twists and powerful performances from Foster and Hopkins; it won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The Shining (1980)

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick released a film called The Shining. This horror movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Stephen King.

The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring, released in 2013, is a horror film that was based on true events. It’s about a family who moves into an old farmhouse and experience paranormal activity.

The movie stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the mother and father of the family respectively.

The Conjuring is rated R for violence/horror sequences and terror throughout, some language including sexual references, and brief drug content.

Get Out (2017)

The film Get Out (2017) is a satirical horror-thriller film directed by Jordan Peele and written by Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, and Charlie Sanders.

It tells the story of Chris Washington Jr., a black man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate in Suburbia for the first time.

Psycho (1960)

This film has been called “the first American horror-thriller” due to its surprising violence for 1960s cinema at the time.

It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, who also co-wrote it with screenwriter Joseph Stefano based on Cornell Woolrich’s 1943 novel “Psycho.”

Psycho is considered one of the most influential American films ever made. It has been ranked among America’s best horror movies by various publications.

It tells the story of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a secretary for an ichthyologist who steals $40,000 from her employer’s client, goes on the run from Sam Loomis (John Gavin), and takes refuge at a remote motel in Los Angeles County owned by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins).

To call Hitchcock’s Psycho a horror film is an understatement. This 1960 masterpiece has been called the most influential and shocking movie ever made, spawning countless imitators and giving us one of our favorite cinematic villains: Norman Bates.

Midsommar (2019)

The film Midsommar by Ari Aster tells the story of a young couple who travel to Sweden for their annual ritualistic midsummer party.

The Orphanage (2007)

The Orphanage (2007) is a 2007 found-footage horror film that was written and directed by J.A. Bayona.

Laura (Belén Rueda) has happy memories of her childhood in an orphanage. She convinces her husband to buy the place and help her convert it into a home for sick children.

One day, her own adopted son, Simón (Roger Príncep), disappears. Simon is critically ill, and when he is still missing several months later, he is presumed dead.

Grief-stricken Laura believes she hears spirits, who may or may not be trying to help her find the boy.

The film explores themes of abandonment, mental abuse, and neglect, but it also focuses on how people can find their inner strength and come together to overcome the hardships they face.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch, The Blair Witch Project is the perfect choice.

Released in 1999 and filmed with an extremely low budget, this film has been hailed as one of the best horror films ever made.

There’s just something about it that makes it stand out from all others – maybe it’s because there was no CGI in the film, or how real everything seemed.

The Witch  is fairly unique when it comes to horror films. It doesn’t feature highly-stylized gore or jump scares, and it relies on the audience’s imagination more than anything else.

Here’s to one of the most ridiculous horror films ever released. The Cabin in the Woods is a 2012 comedy horror film written and directed by Drew Goddard.

It stars Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams, James Gunn, Fran Kranz and Richard Jenkins.

The plot follows five people who go to a remote cabin in the woods for a mysterious reason.

They soon realize their seclusion has been invaded by something much worse than they could have imagined.

A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place is a 2018 American survival horror film directed by John Krasinski and starring Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds.

The film was written by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, based on a story by Krasinski and Andrew Form. The film’s plot follows a family of four who must stay quiet in order to survive an alien invasion.

Funny Games (2007)

Funny Games is a 2007 Austrian psychological horror film written and directed by Michael Haneke. It’s a shot-for-shot remake of his own previous French language version of the film, made 10 years before.

The film tells the story of two young men who target an affluent family for their own motives.

Scream (1996)

In 1996, a film was released that would change the way horror films were made. That movie is Scream and it was directed by Wes Craven.

Alongside some other teens in town, they try to figure out who killed their friends while avoiding being killed themselves.

The Babadook (2014)

The Australian horror film The Babadook, released in 2014, is an example of a psychological thriller that focuses on the themes of grief and motherhood.

It follows Amelia (played by Essie Davis), who has been struggling to cope with her husband’s death for seven years.

When she begins seeing terrifying apparitions from a children’s book called Mister Babadook, her son Samuel also starts acting out and having nightmares about the creature.

This causes Amelia to question whether her son or herself are going crazy and what’s real anymore.

As it turns out, they both are- together they must face their fears if they want any chance at living happily again as a family.

Cloverfield Lane has deliberate pacing, which is precisely what makes the film so engaging.

This tense thriller follows Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up from a car accident only to find herself chained in a bunker with two men: Howard (John Goodman) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.).

Michelle’s situation quickly becomes clear as she realizes these men are not her saviors but rather they are holding her hostage for unknown reasons.

The lack of information leaves viewers reeling as they try to figure out how this will all end while being constantly on the edge of their seats.

It: Chapters One (2017)

Stephen King’s It (2017) is a major motion picture that takes a different approach than the original novel and film. The new version of It is set in the ’80s and centers on a group of teenagers who are dealing with bullying and other issues.

Writer Gary Dauberman and director Andrés Muschietti each took a different approach to developing their film’s script.

The movie has been a big hit for Warner Bros., but it was not without controversy. Fans of the original novel were upset by different casting choices, including some character arcs being changed, and some scenes being moved around or cut altogether.

The film did receive mostly positive reviews from critics, though some questioned whether it really had horror elements.

Carrie (1976) is a 1976 American supernatural horror film based on the eponymous novel by Stephen King.

The film was directed by Brian De Palma and stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, Piper Laurie as Margaret White, Nancy Allen as Margaret’s daughter Sue Snell and Betty Buckley as Miss Collins.

It revolves around a teenager with telekinetic powers who tries to come to terms with her identity and the bullying she suffers at the hands of her classmates.

The Wicker Man (1973)

The Wicker Man, a 1973 British horror film starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee, was one of the most controversial films to be released in the 1970s.

The plot revolves around a devout police officer who travels to an island community with his pregnant daughter to investigate the disappearance of a girl her age.

As he begins questioning residents about what they know about the missing girl, he learns that there is something much more sinister going on than just her disappearance.

This movie is considered a classic cult classic because it has an interesting storyline and features some well-known actors including Edward Woodward who played Detective Sergeant Neil Howie from Z Cars (a popular British TV series) and Christopher Lee who played Lord Summerisle.

This movie was considered controversial for its use of disturbing images and themes which had followers of Celtic religion up in arms.

It’s worth noting that the soundtrack includes folk songs sung in Gaelic and English with lyrics from Robert Burns’ “Tam Lin”.

Saw (2004)

In 2004, director James Wan (of The Conjuring fame) brought to life a new horror film that would soon become one of the most influential in decades.

Saw tells the story of two men – Adam and Lawrence – who wake up to find themselves chained by their ankles to opposite sides of a dirty bathroom.

They can’t remember how they got there or what’s happened, but as they try to figure out where they are and how long they’ve been missing, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary kidnapping.
